Mental Health Alert -Part 1

Because this happens so often to so many people, I felt the need to directly lift this article and  its' list of  "symptoms" in its' entirety... No cute jokes or personal comments.  Just the original article.  Today's posting is part one; tomorrow will be part two;  I'm not sure whether that will finish it or if there will be a part three. This article can be read and studied at: MentalHealthCE.com.  There are work sheets, etc. to help you understand this problem better.  I hope this will help someone out there....  SHALOM  Y'ALL - TWYLA

 The article:
Very few relationships start on terms other than sweetness and politeness. In the beginning, “the honeymoon” of the relationship, it’s difficult to determine what type of individual you are dating. Both you and the date are guarded, trying to obtain information about the other as much as possible without seeming like a police detective.

Romantic relationships can be wonderful with the right person. A relationship with the wrong individual, however, can lead to years of heartache, emotional/social damage, and even physical damage. A damaging adult partner can damage us, damage our loved ones, and even damage the way we feel about love and romance in the future. They can turn what is supposed to be a loving, supporting, and understanding relationship into the “fatal attraction” often described in movies. There are a variety of “bad choices” that may be encountered each week - most of which are easily to identify and avoid. We all know to avoid people that appear insane or abusive and not select them as a dating partner. However, some individuals are better at hiding their personality and behavior abnormalities. In an effort to provide some warning about these very damaging individuals, this information sheet will outline a type of individual commonly found in the dating scene, a male or female labeled a “Controller.”

A Controller is a type of partner that creates much social, emotional and psychological damage in a relationship. A Controller has permanent personality characteristics that create this damage. These are characteristics that they accept simply as the way they are and not a problem or psychological difficulty. In one sense, they have always lived with this personality and behavior, often something they probably learned from their relatives/family. Psychologists usually treat the victims of A Controller, women or men who arrive at the office severely depressed with their self-confidence and self-esteem totally destroyed.

The following list is an attempt to outline the characteristics of a Controller and provide a manner in which women and men can identify potentially damaging relationships, before they are themselves severely damaged emotionally or even physically. If your partner possesses even one of these features, there is risk in the relationship. More than three of these indicators and you are involved with a Controller in a very high risk relationship that will eventually create damage to you. When a high number of these features are present, it’s not a probability or possibility, you will be hurt and damaged by a Controller if you stay in the relationship.

1. Rough Treatment: A Controller will hurt you on purpose. If he or she hits you, twists your arm, pulls your hair, kicks you, shoves you, or breaks your personal property EVEN ONCE, drop them. Male Controllers often begin with behaviors that move you physically or hit the wall. Female Controllers often slap, kick, and even punch their male partners when upset.

2. Quick Attachment and Expression: The Controller has very shallow emotions and connections with others. One of the things that might attract you to a Controller is how quickly he or she says, “I Love You,” or wants to marry or commit to you. Typically, in less than a few weeks of dating you’ll hear that you’re the love of their life, they want to be with you forever, and they want to marry you. You’ll receive gifts, a variety of promises, and be showered with their attention and nice gestures. This is the “honeymoon phase” - where they catch you and convince you that they are the best thing that ever happened to you. Remember the business saying, “If it’s too good to be true, it probably is (too good to be true)!” You may be so overwhelmed by this display of instant attraction, instant commitment, and instant planning for the future that you’ll miss the major point - it doesn’t make sense!! Normal, healthy individuals require a long process to develop a relationship, because there is so much at stake. Healthy individuals will wait for a lot of information before offering a commitment - not three weeks. It’s true that we can become infatuated with others quickly - but not make such unrealistic promises and have the future planned after three dates. The rapid warm-up is always a sign of shallow emotions which later cause a Controller to detach from you as quickly as they committed. A Controller typically wants to move in with you or marry you in less than four weeks or very early in the relationship.

3. Frightening Temper: A Controller has a scary temper. If your boyfriend or girlfriend blows up and does dangerous things, like driving too fast because they’re mad, breaking/throwing things, getting into fights, or threatening others - that temper will soon be turned in your direction. In the beginning of the relationship, you will be exposed to “witnessed violence” - fights with others, threats toward others, angry outbursts at others, etc. You will also hear of violence in their life. You will see and witness this temper - throwing things, yelling, cursing, driving fast, hitting the walls, and kicking things. That quickly serves to intimidate you and fear their potential for violence, although a Controller quickly assures you that they are angry at others or situations, not at you. At first, you will be assured that they will never direct the hostility and violence at you, but they are clearly letting you know that they have that ability and capability - and that it might come your way. Later, you fear challenging or confronting them - fearing that same temper and violence will be turned in your direction.

4. Killing Your Self-Confidence: A Controller repeatedly puts you down. They constantly correct your slight mistakes, making you feel “on guard,” unintelligent, and leaving you with the feeling that you are always doing something wrong. They tell you that you’re too fat, too unattractive, or don’t talk correctly or look well. This gradual chipping away at your confidence and self-esteem allows them to later treat you badly, as though you deserved it. In public, you will be “walking on eggshells” always fearing you are doing or saying something that will later create a temper outburst or verbal argument.

5. Cutting Off Your Support: In order to control someone completely, you must cut off their supportive friends - sometimes even their family. A Controller feels your friends and family might influence you or offer negative opinions about their behavior. A Controller begins by telling you these friends treat you badly, take advantage of you, and don’t understand the special nature of the love you share with them. In some cases, if they can’t get rid of your best same-sex friend, a Controller will claim he or she made a pass at them. If you talk to your friends or family, a Controller will punish you by asking multiple questions or making nasty accusations. Eventually, rather than face the verbal punishment, interrogation, and abuse, you’ll develop the feeling that it’s better not to talk to family and friends. You will withdraw from friends and family, prompting them to become upset with you. A Controller then tells you they are treating you badly again, and you’d be better to keep your distance from them. Once you are isolated and alone, without support, their control over you can increase.

6. The Mean and Sweet Cycle: A Controller cycles from mean to sweet and back again. The cycle starts when they are intentionally hurtful and mean. You may be verbally abused, cursed, and threatened over something minor. Suddenly, the next day they become sweet, doing all those little things they did when you started dating. You hang on, hoping each mean-then-sweet cycle is the last one. The other purpose of the mean cycle is to allow a Controller to say very nasty things about you or those you care about, again chipping away at your self-esteem and self-confidence. A Controller often apologizes but the damage to your self-esteem is already done - exactly as planned.

7. It’s Always Your Fault: A Controller blames you for their anger as well as any other behavior that is incorrect. When they cheat on you, yell at you, treat you badly, damage your property, or embarrass you publicly, it’s somehow your fault. If you are ten minutes late for a date, it’s your fault that the male Controller drives 80 miles per hour, runs people off the road, and pouts the rest of the evening. A Controller tells you their anger and misbehavior would not have happened if you had not made some simple mistake, had loved them more, or had not questioned their behavior. A Controller never, repeat “never,” takes personal responsibility for their behavior - it’s always the fault of someone else. If they drive like a maniac and try to pull an innocent driver off the highway to assault them, it’s actually the fault of the other driver (not him) as they didn’t use a turn signal when they changed lanes. They give you the impression that you had it (anger, yelling, assault) coming and deserved the anger, violence, pouting, or physical display of aggression.

8. Breakup Panic: A Controller panics at the idea of breaking up, unless it’s totally their idea, then you’re dropped like a hot rock. Abusive boyfriends often break down and cry, they plead, they promise to change, and they offer marriage/trips/gifts when you threaten ending the relationship. Both male and female Controllers may threaten suicide, threaten to return to old sweethearts (who feel lucky they’re gone!), or threaten to quit their job and leave the area, as though you will be responsible for those decisions. A Controller offers a multitude of “deals” and halfway measures, like “Let’s just date one more month!”

They shower you with phone calls, often every five minutes, hoping that you will make an agreement or see them just to stop the telephone harassment. Some call your relatives, your friends, their friends, and anyone else they can think of - telling those people to call you and tell you how much they love you. Creative Controllers often create so much social pressure that the victim agrees to go back to the bad relationship rather than continue under the social pressure. Imagine trying to end a relationship and receiving tearful calls from all his or her relatives (they secretly hope you’ll keep them so they don’t have to), seeing a plea for your return in the newspaper or even on a local billboard, receiving flowers at work each day, or having them arrive at your place of work and offer you a wedding ring (male Controller technique) or inform you that they might be pregnant (female Controller technique) in front of your coworkers! Their reaction is emotionally intense, a behavior they use to keep you an emotional prisoner. If you go back to them, you actually fear a worse reaction if you threaten to leave again (making you a prisoner), and they later frequently recall the incident to you as further evidence of what a bad person you are. Remember, if your prize dog jumps the fence and escapes, if you get him back, you build a higher fence. Once back in the grasp of Controller - escape will be three times as difficult the next time.

9. No Outside Interests: A Controller will encourage you to drop your hobbies, interests, and involvement with others. If you have an individual activity, they demand that they accompany you, making you feel miserable during the entire activity. The idea behind this is to prevent you from having fun or interests other than those which they totally control.

More Chicken Talk

Yes, I talk to the chickens... and to the dogs, and the cat, and the squirrels, and the birds,  even the lady bugs...  But, chicken talk is really special;  I understand their lingo. And they know my voice, too. (I think they secretly tell each other, "Oh, boy!  Here she comes... the soft-hearted one... She'll give us extra food!!! Hooray!")

Friday afternoon, Moshe let the chickens out again "to graze" in the yard. And, just like the day before, they seemed to have a wonderful time, clucking, and chirping, and crowing, and eating, and digging, and strolling.  A couple times Moshe and Moxie had to herd them out of the neighbors' yards and back into ours, but, for the most part, they were content and well-behaved...
Well, come sundown, all the chickens entered the arks, as they had the evening before. All seemed well with the world...  After supper, Moshe went out to pull up the ramps on the arks. (This is done to keep it warmer and dryer "upstairs" for the night.)  He looked upset when he came back in, and he promptly announced that one of the black chickens was missing.  "Oh, no!" I said,  " It's going to be sub-freezing temperatures tonight, and if she's alive now , she'll never survive the night."  To which Moshe replied, "I really don't think she's alive.  If she'd been alive, she would've made it back to the ark like all the others."  We talked for half an hour or so, and decided that we are very blessed.  Everybody we know  that has chickens has lost several - or even ALL - of their chickens.  For us to lose only one is amazing.  Plus, God has given us several chickens - all the "peeps" from our neighbor, and "Chicken Little" who just showed up in out yard several weeks ago.  Yes, we are, indeed blessed. Still, it's hard to lose an animal when you've known her since she was only two or three days old...

A little Peep - only a few days old...
Saturday morning I half-expected to see a dead black chicken feet-upward next to the ark. (Oh, I know... What an imagination!)  I had somehow during the night decided that she was alive and that she would try to get back in the ark.  This was not the case. No sign of the black chicken.  No sign of a struggle, either, like one would find if a chicken met up with a mean dog, or a fox, or a mountain lion.  We decided a hawk must have swooped down and got her.  We've seen several red-tailed hawks less than a mile away, so this seemed like the most plausible explanation.
Around lunchtime, I told Moshe I thought I heard a chicken under the house. I have extremely excellent hearing, and I could've sworn I heard a chicken "cluck, cluck, cluck"  coming up through the air vent.  I heard it once in the bathroom, again in the office. It wasn't a "normal" cluck, either.  I told Moshe it was a distress call.  Patient man that he is, he went outside and crawled up under the house to look for the chicken.  Of course, he didn't find one... Plus, Beau (the stray dog we are trying to befriend) sleeps under there.  And, of course, a chicken and a dog aren't going to share quarters for the night! So, I gave up.  Said I must've heard one of the chickens out front and somehow it sounded like it was coming from under the house.  Sometimes, especially when it's rainy or snowy, sound travels in very strange patterns up here in these mountains.

Last night it snowed about an inch or so.  When I got up this morning the temperature was 7 degrees.
Moshe's broken ribs were hurting real bad this morning, so I went out and fed and watered the chickens.  I couldn't help but look for the missing black chicken, even though I knew it was ridiculous.  As if on cue, a big hawk flew overhead, and I thought, " Yup.  That's gotta' be what happened."

About an hour later, I heard the sound again.  The  distressed "cluck, cluck, cluck" coming up the bathroom air vent.  Coincidentally, Moshe was outside at that very moment and heard it from the front yard.  Problem is, he was facing the chicken arks, but he heard the chicken talking behind him.  On further inspection, there was the "missing" black chicken up under the house.  Moshe fetched her out of there and put her in one of the arks.  Two hours later, she was STILL eating!  Poor baby.

Pretty Face peeking thru the snow
Meanwhile Pretty Face has decided her babies are grown.  Or, at least, grown enough... She doesn't coddle her three peeps any more;  treats all the peeps as equals now, although the original three are still more likely to sleep with her than the others... Pretty Face is a talker!!! I mean, she talks a lot! She bosses all those peeps around like crazy. "Bud-up-up-up-up-up-up."  And, "Burrr-yee-awk!"  And, then there's the occasionally  true cackle.  One day last week, I thought, "That sounded like an egg cackle; I should check her house and see if she's laying eggs yet."  But, I was busy and didn't do it.  The next day, Moshe came in with four eggs from Pretty Face's house!  I  KNEW  it!  The true cackle is invariably an announcement of an egg.  This morning there were two of them in there.  Pretty Face  is back in the egg-laying business.
So, I talk to chickens and chickens talk to me. I wonder what will happen if we get goats...

P.S. Apparently a stray dog and a lost chicken  DO  make good roommates!

This Is A Must-See!!!

If you think that Islam is a "peaceful religion", this is a must-see.  The man giving the lecture is Walid Shoebat, a former Muslim.  He grew up in Jerusalem, was taught to hate Jews and Christians - in that order.   He is now a Christian, and is trying to educate Americans about how serious the Islamic threat really is.

Walid  Shoebat

There are two segments, each about 45 minutes long.  We have watched it twice, each time wishing he would talk even longer!  We watched it with open Bibles and pen and paper.  I have about three hours worth of reading to do in the scriptures - references Walid gave in his talk that I want to read word-for-word.

We also watched Mr Shoebats' video, " ...on being taught to hate the Jew...".  It was eye-opening as well.
If you are interested in seeing/hearing more of  Mr Shoebat's  speeches, Google his name and you will find an assortment of videos.   The next one I want to watch is "FIRED UP at Six Flags", which was filmed on Dec 27th, 2010.
Sorry this is such a somber topic, but it's been on my mind... And, it might  help explain why I devised my little "Muslim Cosby Show" the other day in response to Katie Couric's nonsense on TV.
I will try - tomorrow - to go back to my lighter side...

Them Chickens is Confusin' Me!

Yup.  Every time I think I understand chicken behavior, they throw me for another loop. A month or so ago, we tried to put Pretty Face back in her original coop with. her "sisters" and they nearly pecked her to death.  We ended up putting her back in with her babies, creating a sort of commune for her, her peeps, and the other peeps we had raised indoors.  We introduced an orphan, Chicken Little, to that brood, and, after a brief rejection, all the peeps have included in her in their routine.
That being said, here's what happened yesterday/last night. Moshe let all the chickens out on the front yard yesterday afternoon "to graze".  Oh, they were happy!   They ate what little grass and green weeds that remain in the yard,  had a gourmet buffet on the remnants of the winter garden... romaine lettuce, cabbage, broccoli, swiss chard... After the past two weeks with snow and ice and hardship,  I'm certain they were as thrilled as a chicken can get.

But, then came evening.  As expected, the chickens went back into the arks. But, when Moshe went outside  to make an official count, there was a little bit of a discrepancy.  For one thing, Brewster was in the ark he doesn't normally live in... I think we all know what THAT was about!  Naughty, naughty Brewster!!! Moshe corrected that by moving him back to his original ark.  But there was still a discrepancy in hen numbers.  It seems that one of the hens from Brewster's ark was also in the opposite ark.  Problem is, she looks identical to the black hen that's already in there with all the golden comets.  So, Moshe just left them "as is". I was worried about it - afraid that the other chickens would attack her - but, Moshe said he'd check them in the morning and move her if need be.

Well, this morning all the chickens were living together in complete harmony.  No pecking. No cackling or crowing.  No ostracism.  Complete harmony. Eating, sleeping, drinking, laying eggs.  So, now we have come to the conclusion that if we move the chickens around at night, they won't know the difference come morning...

Hey! How'd YOU get in this post?
maybe I should stick to the kind I collect and decorate the kitchen with!

We Need A WHAT???

KATIE COURIC: ‘WE NEED A MUSLIM VERSION OF THE COSBY SHOW’ from The Blaze on Vimeo.

I don't usually write about politics; I leave that to my hubby.  But, this video just BEGGED for comment...
Poor Katie Couric;  she thinks we could all just live happily ever after if only we terrible Americans could be more tolerant of the Muslims;  if only we didn't have such "bigotry against the Muslims";  if only we would take the time to understand the Muslims;  if only...
Of course, once you've seen this video, you realize that NONE of the people on this particular discussion panel had any idea what Islam is about!  The self-proclaimed "smart"  man sitting next to Katie admitted that he knows nothing about Islam!  (Thus, the intelligent question would be, "Why then is he discussing the topic???" On TV!  Sheesh! ) He repeats himself, saying, "I'm pretty smart", then, goes on to look and sound the fool.  And, nobody on the panel says anything.  They just nod  like bobble-headed animals in the back of a 1972 station wagon.
So then Ms Couric  states that what we need is a Muslim version of the Cosby Show, "because we learned so much more about  the African-Americans from  Cosby."  She and her cohorts dismiss the idea that it might be offensive to the REST OF US to have a mosque at the site of  9/11.  Poor Katie;  she couldn't even get out the term "ground zero", instead, tripping over her own subconscious desire to refer to the site as "9/11."
But, okay.  Let's suppose "they" create a series... a "Muslim Cosby Show."  Of course,  there would have to be a very limited number of episodes...  Let's see. . here's the cast...

  • the father-figure:  AchMed UpSett  - played by  ????? (hmmm, maybe Mr-I'm-A-Smart-Guy would do it?)
  • his wife:  Subserv UpSett    - played by anybody who happens to be standing around; what with the  burka and all, why pay an actress?
  • their oldest child:  Sondra Kendall  - played by an unknown actress;  she is only in one episode because she married Martin Kendall an infidel;  in this first episode  she is stoned to death and her husband beheaded.
  • the next oldest daughter:   Denise       - the "wild" daughter.  Because she is artistic, likes interesting clothes, far-out hairdos, and extreme make-up,, she is ostracized from her family.  Her story is the second episode, and then she is done with the series.  Once again, any known or unknown actress will do for this "cameo appearance".
  • the son, Theo AchMed UpSett: Theo gets to be in several episodes. The stoning episode, the ostracism episode, the circumcision episode, the suicide bombing.... ah, but I'm getting ahead of myself...
  • the next daughter, Vanessa UpSett: This is the 'good girl" of the show.  She only speaks when spoken to, and that is seldom, what with the activity of stoning, etc.  She wears the burka 24/7, and submits to anyone and everyone...She is the star of the final episode, wherein her father straps several bombs under her burka, and she explodes them at the local mall, proving once and for all that she is a good, loving Muslim. Gee, I wonder what actress would want to play this role?
  • The youngest daughter, Rudy: Rudy only gets to be in one episode.  She dies of bleeding complications when the father performs a female circumcision, and botches it.

Okay, I count 5 episodes.  A short-lived series, to say the least.  I wonder if Katie Couric would like to be the director.  Or, maybe it would be better if the "I'm pretty smart" man directed the show.
No need for reruns;  just turn on CNN, the CBS nightly news, NBC news, etc., and you can see these episodes played in real living color!
Anyhow, now that we are up to "snuff" on the Muslims, how 'bout the news folks talk about something they are actually educated about?

Hey, Good Lookin' What Ya' Got Cookin'?

Okay.  Sometimes I actually get tired of cooking.  There!  I said it!  And, I was in that mood this afternoon...  But, then, I got in the kitchen and started doing a little bit of this, a little bit of that... and before I knew it, I was in the full-blown cooking mode.
Yesterday I made my Baked Bean Casserole (recipe to follow, below).  We had some reheated today for lunch, alongside a nice iron skillet full of baked cornbread.  Moshe said the cornbread "just melts in your mouth";  I will take that as a supreme compliment!  Much like chili, spaghetti sauce, and many soups, the baked bean casserole is even- better warmed-up-than-the-day-you-cooked-it.  Dee-lish!  I figured I should share my recipe; it's an odd combination of ingredients...  My dear friend, Teresa, was the first person to ask me for my recipe.  I printed her a copy and she took it home with her... A couple days later, she called me: "Twyla, I'm getting ready to make your baked beans recipe... Ummm... I think there's a mistake... Ummm... Did you really mean to have romaine as an ingredient?"  The answer is below, in the recipe.  Hint: I'm fairly adventurous in the kitchen, so you just never know what I might include in a recipe - especially vegetables!
This afternoon I'm making my version of crock pot macaroni and cheese - it is not for the faint-hearted or anyone who believes in Lipitor!  Again,  I have had MANY people ask for this recipe, so I'm sharing it today.

 Twyla's Baked Bean Casserole:

28-ounce Can Vegetarian Baked Beans
1 Tablespoon Coarse-ground Black Pepper
1/3 Cup Honey
1 Tablespoon + 1 teaspoon Apple Cider Vinegar
1/2 Cup Ketchup
3/4 teaspoon Tabasco Sauce
1 pound ground beef, browned
1/2 pound turkey ham, diced and browned
1/4 Cup Vegetable oil
1 Cup Onion, finely chopped
1/2 Cup Tomatoes, finely chopped
1 Cup Romaine lettuce, shredded
2 Tablespoons minced garlic
1 Can Fried Onion Rings

Preheat oven at 350 degrees.
Mix the first six ingredients in a large bowl; set aside. Brown the ground beef in one pan; the turkey ham in another, using a bit of olive oil in the pan, if necessary.  When the meats are browned, add them to the bean mixture, and set it aside again.
Place vegetable oil in skillet; add the onion, tomatoes, romaine, and garlic;  saute until onions are just beginning to brown, and the liquid from the tomatoes has all absorbed in the mixture. Add this to the bean mixture.  Mix well.
Spray large casserole dish with vegetable oil spray;  pour mixture in to casserole.  Bake at 350 for 45 minutes;  cover with the canned onion rings and bake for an additional 10 minutes.
This will serve 6 to 8 people.  I serve it either with greens and cornbread or with macaroni and cheese and a nice tossed salad.

Crock Pot Macaroni and Cheese

8 oz box macaroni, cooked and drained
1 can Evaporated milk (12 ounces)
1 1/4 Cups Water
1/2 Cup powdered milk
1 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 teaspoon coarse-ground black pepper
1 egg, beaten
3 Cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
1 cup grated cheese - any variety - for top of casserole

Spray crock pot with vegetable oil spray.  Mix all ingredients, except the last cup of cheese together in a large bowl.  Pour into crock pot.  Top with that last cup of cheese, and cook on low for 3 to 3 1/2 hours.
This can be baked in the conventional oven rather than the crock pot;  bake it at 350 for one hour.  We feel that it is better slow-cooked in the crock pot.  I have taken this to many covered dish suppers, and it is always a hit!

Southern Fare for New Year's Day

Traditional (or " superstitional") food to be eaten on New Years Day in the South includes black-eyed peas, greens, and cornbread.  The practice of eating black-eyed peas for luck is believed to date back to the  War Between the States.  Planted as food for livestock,  the fields of black-eyed peas were overlooked as Sherman's troops destroyed or stole other crops. This gave the black-eyed pea  an important role as a major food source for the surviving Confederates.

Nowadays, the tradition of eating black-eyed peas on New Years Day has morphed into a number of variations   including:

When served with greens (collards, mustard or turnip greens, cabbage, whichever grows in the area), the peas represent coins and the greens represent paper money.
Cornbread, often served with black-eyed peas and greens, represents gold.
For the best chance of luck every day in the year ahead, one must eat at least 365 black-eyed peas on New Year's Day.   That's a lot of black-eyed peas!!!
We didn't really follow tradition... We had my famous baked-bean casserole with greens.  No cornbread. Somehow I don't think it will matter "a hill of beans" what we ate today!  Tee-hee.  I am not a superstitious person, and have generally resisted fitting in with tradition, so my menu will have to suffice.
Oh, we also had rocky road ice cream... d'ya' think that will help our luck and prosperity?
